Ephesians 1:3-14



Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (Eleventh Edition) defines the word “purpose” as: Something set up as an object or end to be attained.



You Have Been Placed on This Earth to Experience God’s Blessings:      vv. 3-5

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will


1.         A new creation .        2 Corinthians 5:17


2.         A new heart . Romans 5:1-5


3.         A new direction . Ephesians 2:19



We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:20-21).



You Have Been Placed on this Earth to Fulfill God’s Plan:         vv. 6-11

to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. 9And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.

11In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,

Yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand (Isaiah 64:8).



You Have Been Placed on this Earth to Minister:

vv. 12-14


in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possessionÑto the praise of his glory.


1.         Share the love of Christ.       1 John 3:1-3


2.         Share the Church of Christ.  Matthew 20:28


3.         Convey the hope of Christ.   Ephesians 2:10


4.         Demonstrate the joy of Christ.          Ephesians 3:17-19

so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19and to know this love that surpasses knowledgeÑthat you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
