Song of Songs 5:16

“His mouth is sweetness itself; he is altogether lovely. This is my lover, this my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.”

The title “Song of Songs” (like “holy of holies”) means “the finest of all songs.” Since Solomon composed over 1,000 songs (1 Kings 4:32), this must be classified as the best of them all. It is a book full of symbols and images, a book that requires maturity and spiritual discernment to appreciate and enjoy.

Christ Is Lovely in His Attributes:

1. Lovely in His speech . Luke 23:34

“Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.'”

2. Lovely in His humility . Philippians 2:8

“And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross!”

3. Lovely in His longsuffering . 2 Peter 3:9

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

4. Lovely in His sinlessness . Romans 5:8

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

5. Lovely in His name . Philippians 2:10-11

“that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Jesus Is the Sweetest Name I Know

There have been names that I have loved to hear,

But never has there been a name so dear

To this heart of mine As the name divine,

The precious, precious name of Jesus.

Jesus is the sweetest name I know,

And He’s just the same as His lovely name,

And that’s the reason why I love Him so.

Oh, Jesus is the sweetest name I know.

6. Lovely in His work . John 3:16

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

“My heart prompts me to say that the highest praise of every ransomed soul and the entire Christian Church should be offered to the person of Christ, our adorable Lord.”

– C. H. Spurgeon

Christ’s Loveliness Begs for a Response: 1 Peter 1:18-19

“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.”

1. Attraction . Married to Christ. Romans 7:4

“So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.”

2. Affection . Dedicated to Christ. James 4:4-5

“You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely?”

When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these? Yes, Lord, he said, you know that I love you. Jesus said, Feed my lambs‘” (John 21:15).

3. Attention . Fellowship with Christ. Song of Songs 7:11
