Mark 3:7-19

Jesus has enjoyed a season of immense popularity, but now there are those who want to kill Him. Thus, He begins to move from one location to another.

What Attracted Them to Jesus?   vv. 7-12

1.         They were attracted to His speech .     vv. 7-9

Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed. 8When they heard all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon. 9Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him.

2.         They were attracted to His touch .         v. 10

For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him.

3.         They were attracted to His divinity .       v. 11-12

Whenever the evil spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” 12But he gave them strict orders not to tell who he was.

What Happened When They Encountered Jesus?           vv. 13-19

1.         He asked them to serve .            v. 13

Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him.

2.         He ordained them to preach .    v. 14

He appointed twelve designating them apostlesÑthat they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach

3.         He equipped them to survive .   vv. 15-19

and to have authority to drive out demons. 16These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); 17James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means Sons of Thunder); 18Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot 19and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

What Can We Learn from this Lesson?

1.         When we lose , we find.  Philippians 1:21

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

2.         When we die , we live.     Philippians 1:22-23

If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;

3.         When we give , we gain. Philippians 2:4-7

Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

5Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

4.         When we surrender , we conquer.        Philippians 3:8-9

What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.
