John 10:9-10

I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

God’s Word often compares Christians with sheep. It should be noted that comparison is not always a compliment.

Characteristics of Sheep:                                                                                   Isaiah 53:6

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

1.         Sheep are often undisciplined .

2.         Sheep are creatures of habit .

3.         Sheep need constant encouragement and direction .

4.         Sheep will drink polluted waters .

5.         Sheep are distracted by friction .

6.         Sheep can be isolationists .

7.         Sheep get tired easily.

Application: Sheep need correction and community .

Sheep Need Shepherding:                                                                               Psalm 23:1-6

1.         They need a shepherd to survive .                                             v. 1-4

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. 2He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name=s sake. 4Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

2.         They need a shepherd to thrive .                                              v. 5-6

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Application: Sheep need care and Christ .

Savior, like a Shepherd Lead Us

Savior, like a shepherd lead us; Much we need Thy tender care.

In Thy pleasant pastures feed us; For our use Thy folds prepare.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! Thou hast bought us; Thine we are.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! Thou hast bought us; Thine we are.
