Exodus 20: 8-11

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

The fourth commandmentÐto observe the Sabbath was good news to slaves who had to work seven days a week in Egypt. You can almost hear them say, Now this is a good one. Who will ever argue over a day?

Unfortunately, this commandment has caused a greater controversy than all the other commandments put together.

The Historical Observance Of The Sabbath:                                                                                 v.8

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

A definition of the Sabbath: It comes from the Hebrew word Shabbot which means Arest.

1.         The voice of Scripture .

2.         The voice of the church and the voice of God .

Ways We Violate The Sabbath:                                                                                                       v.9

Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

1.         Making it a catch-all day.

2.         Making purchases that are unnecessary.

3.         Letting television keep us away from GodÕs house.

4.         Using it as a get-away day instead of worshiping God.

5.         Secular amusement .

Understanding the Sabbath Day Principle:                                                                          vv.10-11

But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughters, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

1.         The Sabbath is for rest .                                                            Psalm 127:2

God’s prescription for people under pressure is, in fact, taking a Sabbath.

2.         The Sabbath is for remembering .                                            Genesis 2:1-3

3.         The Sabbath is meant for worship .                                          Romans 14:5

God’s people need to rest, reflect and worship in a systematic manner. To do so is to experience renewal physically, mentally and spiritually. It’s God’s plan for man’s good; it is a powerful principle for positive living!
