Psalm 19:1-14

The Bible is the final authority on all foundational issues. David’s prayer is one that all Christians should pray.

God Speaks Through His Creation: vv. 1-6

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. 3There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. 4Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun, 5which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. 6It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat.”

1. Natural revelation. v. 1

2. Spiritual revelation. vv. 2-6

God Speaks Through His Word: vv. 7-9

“The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. 9The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the Lord are sure and altogether righteous.”

1. His Word is a mirror . James 1:22

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

2. His Word is a sword . Ephesians 6:17

“Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

3. His Word is a lamp . Psalm 119:105

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”

4. His Word is a guidebook . 1 Peter 2:2

“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,”

God Speaks Through His Presence: vv. 10-14

“They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. 11By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. 12Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults. 13Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression. 14May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

1. He speaks with an audible voice. Exodus 3:4

“When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, ‘Moses! Moses!’ And Moses said, ‘Here I am.'”

2. He speaks through dreams and visions . Isaiah 6:1

“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple.”

3. He speaks through people . 2 Corinthians 13:1-5

4. He speaks through an inner voice. Isaiah 30:21

“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.'”

Food for thought: “The Holy Spirit never contradicts the Word of God.”
