Luke 2:21-40

Simeon’s song is a striking benediction to the citizens enjoying the imposed tranquility of Pax Romana. How well they knew that the absence of overt rebellion in the streets could never guarantee the presence of righteous-ness in their souls. But Caesar was not God’s chosen servant, nor Rome’s legions His heavenly instruments of peace. That was reserved for the Prince of Peace.

 

Where Does Real Peace come From? vv. 30-35

For my eyes have seen your salvation, 31which you have prepared in the sight of all people, 32a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel. 33The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: ‘This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.

1. Some think of peace as the absence of conflict and pain .

2. God’s peace is shalom .

 

” . . .through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross” (Colossians 1:20).

 

What Is Real Peace? vv. 36-40

“There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. 38Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem 39When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. 40And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.”

 

1. Peace is knowing the truth .

2. Peace is unconditional love.

3. Peace is eternal hope.

4. Peace is freedom from guilt.

 

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

How Can I Obtain Real Peace? II Peter 3:14

“So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.”

1. Peace is a free gift.

2. Peace requires obedience to God.

3. Peace is received through an open heart .
